They\u2019re talking in languages I don\u2019t understand,\u201d Ned said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been happening to me too\u2014right now in fact,\u201d Jeff turned and looked down the sidewalk to a beach that should be\u00a0an\u00a0intersection with another street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut they don\u2019t seem to see us, do they?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, it\u2019s like a movie playing in my mind\u2014like they\u2019re not really here. Is that what you\u2019re experiencing, Jeff?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, exactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a7 \u00a7\u00a0\u00a7<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-indent: 23px;\">\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a problem in the alpha set,\u201d the monitor said. \u201cPeople and events are bleeding through from another set\u2014maybe the delta or gamma set.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll get right on it,\u201d the technician said. \u201cIs anyone getting alarmed by it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWondering or disturbed a little is how I\u2019d describe it. We have to get this fixed ASAP. Thinking about tanning, volleyball or beachcombing is fine but we can\u2019t have the alpha\u2019s seeing episodes from people on a beach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what\u2019s coming through\u203d\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, totally out-of-place for them. They\u2019ll lose focus on their daily lives\u2014on the trauma they\u2019re facing. We can\u2019t have that! The experiment must be controlled.
